Where and when were you born? Born in Lancaster PA on August 15, 1959
What is your profession? I own and operate my personal training studio, work for a contractor as a bookkeeper and I am a “Certified Laser Technician” and office manager for a Laser Hair and Skin Rejuvenation Salon.
Were you involved in sports or fitness prior to bodybuilding and how did you get started with weight training? I was a cheerleader in grammar school and high school, ran track in high school and played softball. I became involved with weight at the age of 26 when I dated a boyfriend who had a make shift gym in the basement. I then walked into a gym at 27 yrs old and said I want to put on muscle so the owner worked me out so hard that I threw up and proceeded to come back for more. At that point I was hooked.
Was it a goal for you to compete in bodybuilding competitions right from the beginning or was it something that grew in your mind as time went on and you saw the progress in your body? I never had the confidence to compete but knew I wanted to. At the age of of 45 I took the plunge into “figure” and from then moved into BodyBuilding. That is where I am today.
Can you give me your competition history? 2005 Mid-Atlantic 3rd place Tall figure, Lehigh Valley Tall figure 2nd , Mountain Valley Tall figure 3rd; 2006 Mid-Atlantic tall figure 2nd, Lehigh Valley Tall open figure 5th Lehigh Valley Tall Master Figure 2nd, X-Calibre “Middleweight 1st ;2007Jr Nationals Middleweight 2nd place.
Which contest has been your biggest success; which has had the most meaning to you? 2005 year, because I did it on my own and conquered the fears that I had about myself. I went from hardly training at all to doing a show and taking top 5 in my first event. Then crossing over to Bodybuilding in 2006-and winning 2nd place at my first “National” event.
Please tell me something about your training routine (ie: how many days per week / training split /cardio, etc.) on season I train EVERDAY with cardio at least 1hr a day to 2 hrs depending on what I look like!! I train Legs Sunday, chest and bi on Mondays, back Tuesday with some hamstrings, Wed Shoulders and Tri Thursday off then start over again. Each week it is a different day that I take off and I never do the same routine twice. I alternate heavy 6-8 reps, then mix it up with 12-15 reps. I always keep my body guessing.
What is your favorite exercise in the gym and which one you don’t like so much? I LOVE BACK training ,anything at ALL that has to do with back, I HATE squats…My back has so many issues and barbell squats KILL my back and hip. I do however LOVE HEAVY LEG PRESS. That is what I excel in as far as weight.
Which body part is your best in your opinion? My chest.
If you don’t mind would you give me some stats (best lifts and some body measurements)? Leg Press 900, Squat 200, 35-24-35
What do you enjoy about training for competition....what do you enjoy about the 'off season'? I enjoy everything about training season. I love the dieting, working out and feeling great. I struggle off season because I like to stay focused on my next event. I do however like pizza and wine off season
Please describe a typical day in the life of Colleen Mahony-Sgro. Up at 6:30-7am train people in my gym, train myself, train other people in there home, work at the Laser place when it it necessary, then back home every evening to train more people, usually getting done at 7:30pm, then I cook for my husband. I work every Monday with the contractor after I train a client in the morning at 9am, then I come back from NJ by 4:30pm and train more people. I work 7 days a week.
Please tell me about what you do when you don’t work out (hobbies, what do you do to relax?, etc.) I love to horseback ride and my husband and I own a “funny Car’ so we go Drag racing during the summer month. I do the mechanical maintenance on the car.
What do you enjoy most about the bodybuilding/fitness lifestyle? The people that I have met. I did not know that so many people look up to me and I inspire them. That is wonderful to hear. I love being pumped up by other who enjoy the sport as much as I do .
Tell me something interesting about yourself, something people may be surprised to hear. I went skydiving September 4. In high school I was not your typical “good girl” so I am surprised that I took up such a healthy lifestyle.
What are your competition goals or personal future goals? I plan on competing in 2008, not sure what shows yet or how many and I plan on training others at my gym and helping them with their goals.
Colleen does not do sessions or wrestling of any kind. Please don't ask!!
