MY BACK IS MY BEST BODY PART. IT IS ALSO MY FAVORITE TO TRAIN BECAUSE I FEEL SO POWERFUL. MY LEGS ARE MY LEAST FAVORITE TO TRAIN BECAUSE IT TAKES SO MUCH OUT OF ME AND THE RESULTS ARE SLOW TO SHOW UP.

 

HOW I GOT INVOLVED INTO LIFTING WEIGHTS
IT WAS IN 1995 THAT I FIRST BEGAN LIFTING WEIGHTS. I MET TWO GIRLS IN THE GYM WHERE I WORKED OUT THAT WERE MUSCULAR AND CUT. I COMPLIMENTED THEM ON THEIR PHYSIQUE AND THEY ASK ME WHY WITH ALL THE HOURS I SPEND IN THE GYM DID I NOT GO INTO THE WEIGHT ROOM. I TOLD THEM I DID NOT KNOW THE PROPER WAY TO LIFT THE WEIGHTS AND WITH ALL THE MEN IN THERE YELLING I FELT INTIMIDATED. IN THOSE DAYS IT WASN’T AS COMMON TO HAVE YOUR OWN PERSONAL TRAINER. THEY OFFERED TO HELP ME SO WE BEGAN WORKING OUT TOGETHER. IN ONLY ONE MONTH’S TIME MY BODY STARTED TAKING ON SHAPE AND I BEGAN GETTING DEFINITION. I WAS SO EXCITED THAT I COULDN’T WAIT TO GET TO THE GYM AND LIFT EVERYDAY.

 

TWO YEARS LATER I WAS IN THE AREOBICS ROOM WORKING ON MY ABS WHEN A GIRL NAMED THERESA HESSLER CAME IN TO PRACTICE HER FITNESS ROUTINE. WHEN I SAW HER MY EYES LIT UP IN AMAZEMENT. I HAD NEVER SAW A PROFESSIONAL COMPETITOR BEFORE AND I REALIZED SHE HAD THE LOOK I WANTED TO HAVE. WHEN SHE FINISHED HER ROUTINE I SPOKE TO HER. I WANTED TO KNOW WHY MY ABS DIDN’T LOOK LIKE HERS AND SHE SAID IT WAS THE NUTRITION SO SHE REFERRED ME TO HER NUTRITIONIST TODD SWINNEY.

 

TODD SWEENEY IS A WELL KNOWN SPORTS NUTRITION COUNSELOR IN MARYLAND. HE HAS GOTTEN MANY PEOPLE READY FOR COMPETITIONS BUT DEALS WITH ALL WALKS OF LIFE. I WENT TO HIM SAYING THAT I DIDN’T WANT TO COMPETE BUT WANTED TO HAVE THE SAME SCULPTURED BODY AS A COMPETITOR. HE PLANNED OUT MY MEALS AND WAS STRAIGHT FORWARD SAYING, “YOU WILL GET OUT OF YOUR BODY WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.” “GARBADGE IN, GARBADGE OUT.” IN OTHER WORDS YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!

 

I DEVOTED SIX MONTHS TO HIS PROGRAM AND CHANGED BY BODY FROM 30% BODYFAT DOWN TO 18%. I SEEM TO HOLD MY BODYFAT WELL SO WHEN I AM AT 18% I HAVE THE APPEARANCE OF 12%. I BEGAN GETTING COMPLIMENTS CONSTANTLY AND MANY PEOPLE INCLUDING KEVIN LEVRONE ASKED IF I WAS COMPETING.

 

THREE YEARS LATER IN APRIL OF 2000 I WENT BACK TO TODD AND TOLD HIM I WANTED TO COMPETE IN THE NPC MARYLAND STATE IN JULY. I WAS AT 16% BODYFAT AND HAD APPROXIMATELY 16 WEEKS TO GET READY. I GAVE 100% TO MY NUTRITION AND TRAINING. I WAS ALL NATURAL AND IN 16 WEEKS TIME WAS ABLE TO GAIN 12LBS OF MUSCLE AND LOSE 9% BODYFAT. I COMPETED AT 7% BODYFAT WEIGHING 124LBS. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME COMPETING AND I WON MY MIDDLE WEIGHT CLASS AND THE OVERALL RECEIVING THE TITLE OF THE NPC 2000 MARYLAND STATE CHAMPION.

 

TWO WEEKS LATER I ENTERED THE NPC BODYROCK IN FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA. IN THIS COMPETITION I WAS 7% BODYFAT AT 128LBS. I AGAIN WON MY MIDDLE WEIGHT CLASS AND THERE WAS ONLY 1 POINT DIFFERENCE IN THE OVERALL.

 

BACK IN 2000 THE JUDGING IN WOMEN’S BODYBUILDING WAS LEANING TOWARDS THE MORE FEMININE LOOK OF THE 80’S; HOWEVER, OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS IT APPEARS TO BE BACK TO THE OVERLY MUSCULAR FREAKY LOOK. I’M SORRY IF I AM OFFENDING ANYONE BUT IT IS JUST NOT THE HEALTHY FEMININE LOOK I LIKE TO MAINTAIN. I LOVE BEING MUSCULAR AND STRONG BUT I WISH TO STAY NATURAL AND KEEP MY FEMINE FEATURES. I GUESS I HAVE THE LOOK OF A PRO LEVEL FITNESS GIRL COMBINED WITH THE AMATURE BODYBUILDER. I DON’T HAVE THE GYMNASTICS BACKGROUND TO COMPETE IN FITNESS AND I DON’T WANT TO LOOSE MY MUSCLE TO COMPETE IN THE PHYSIQUE CATEGORY SO I CURRENTLY HAVE NO PLANS ON COMPETING. (I HAVE BEEN AN NPC JUDGE FOR LOCAL COMPETITIONS FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS) MY WORKOUT GOAL IN LIFE IS TO BE THE BEST I CAN BE BY WORKING OUT HARD AND EATING HEALTHY. I STRIVE EACH YEAR TO BE BETTER THAN THE YEAR BEFORE. ALTHOUGH IT WAS EXCITING TO WIN THE TROPHYS BACK IN 2000 I DON’T FEEL THAT I NEED TO BE HANDED A TROPHY TO BE MY BEST. I DO THIS FOR ME SO I CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE MY OWN TROPHY; HOWEVER, I AM GLAD I CAN BE A MOTIVATION TO OTHERS. I ONCE WAS THE FOLLOWER BUT NOW AM THE LEADER!

 

A TYPICAL DAY FOR ME IS TO GET UP AT 8:00 A.M. AND WALK ON AN INCLINE ON MY TREADMILL FOR ONE HOUR. I EAT BREAKFAST (MY 1ST MEAL) AT 9:00 A.M. I EAT MY LUNCH (2ND MEAL) AT 12:00 P.M. I GO TO WORK AND TRAIN CLIENTS FROM 1-8 P.M. WITH A BREAK AT 4:00P.M. TO EAT MY (3RD MEAL). I EAT MY (4TH MEAL) AT 8:00 P.M. AND THEN GO TO A DIFFERENT GYM TO DO MY WORKOUT. I WORKOUT FROM 9-11P.M. I EAT MY (5TH MEAL) LAST MEAL OF THE DAY AT 11:30P.M. I THEN OPEN MY MAIL AND CHECK EMAILS. I GO TO BED BY 1:30A.M.

 

MY TRAINING ROUTINE CONSIST OF 6 DAYS ON AND 1 DAY OFF TRAINING EACH BODYPART TWICE A WEEK. THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK I USE MASS BUILDING EXERCISES AND THE SECOND PART OF THE WEEK CUTTING EXERCISES.
