Some Info about EVA:

Where and when were you born?
I was born on May 1st, 1987, in Vantaa, Finland.

What is your profession?
I graduated from High School 2006 fall and now I’m working for a computer company.

Were you involved in sports or fitness prior to bodybuilding and how did you get started with weight training?
When I was still high school I started working out at a local gym; doing aerobics, indoor cycling, and lifting weights. A female personal trainer at the gym told me I looked really good and suggested I try competing in figure. But as I got more serious about training, I started to get more interested in bodybuilding. I started looking at pictures of female bodybuilders like Cindy Phillips and Britt Miller on the internet and thought that they looked awesome and so feminine. I decided that's how I wanted to look too and I joined the gym in Helsinki where Inkeri Salminen (one of the top female bodybuilders in Finland) trained. I did my first show, Finnish Nationals, in October 2007.

Was it a goal for you to compete in bodybuilding competitions right from the beginning or was it something that grew in your mind as time went on and you saw the progress in your body?
Actually I was interested in figure shows initially, but as I got more serious about training, I started to get more interested in bodybuilding. When I saw myself improving, I knew I wanted to compete some day.

Can you give me your competition history?
I competed at Finnish Nationals – my first show - in October 2007. I took 1st in the teen division and 3rd place from the open class.

Which contest has been your biggest success; which has had the most meaning to you?
Well, the 2007 Finnish Nationals is the first show I’ve done, so I’d have to say that one, lol. I went through a long 24-week diet, which was rough mentally and physically, but it was amazing to see myself in contest shape for the first time. I’m now more motivated than ever to continue and achieve more in bodybuilding.

Please tell me something about your training routine (ie: how many days per week / training split /cardio, etc.)
Monday: off (cardio)
Tuesday: Chest and bi's, abs
Wednesday: Back and traps
Thursday: Biceps and triceps, abs
Friday: off (cardio)
Saturday: Legs
Sunday: Shoulders and triceps, abs
I like to change up my workouts in order to focus on different muscle groups, especially bodyparts I want to improve. For example, since my show, I’ve started to focus on my arms more, so that's why I train them twice a week. I do cardio for about 20-30 minutes on a treadmill after my workout. Most of the time I do intervals.

What is your favorite exercise in the gym and which one you don’t like so much?
Nowadays I just love to train biceps, triceps and chest. Those are the main muscle groups that I’m trying to improve now, and I actually like to train them.
The one workout I don’t like is the usual - leg day. It’s always so tough, and you have to prepare for it mentally several days before.

Which body part is your best in your opinion?
I used to say my legs, but I lost a lot of size when I was dieting for my show - so probably my shoulders at the moment.

If you don’t mind would you give me some stats (best lifts and some body measurements)?
I can’t really answer this one – I go by feel in the gym and I don’t measure myself.

What do you enjoy about training for competition....what do you enjoy about the 'off season'?
When I am prepping for a show, I love seeing my progress day by day, even though I can’t always see it with my own eyes and need my trainer’s opinion for that.
Off season training rocks, cos you have a lot more power in your workouts, plus you get to eat more, so u don’t have to go training when you’re starving.

Please describe a typical day in the life of Eva Kovalainen.
I wake up at 6am, do my make-up, make breakfast and eat it, then drive to work at 7:30, work for about 8 hours, then I drive to home, throw creatine, arginine, etc into my mouth, drink a protein shake and eat bread, get changed and then drive to the gym.
The whole trip takes about 3 hours (if I do cardio and have friends at the gym to talk with, lol), then I drive home, eat, make my meals for the next day, get online, answer e-mails and chat with my friends, maybe watch tv for awhile and then go to bed.

Please tell me about what you do when you don’t work out (hobbies, what do you do to relax?, etc.)
I go to the movies with friends, relax at home, draw, watch tv, go online, play videogames etc.

What do you enjoy most about the bodybuilding/fitness lifestyle?
I've always loved the look of female bodybuilders. I love the way female bodybuilders look strong and feminine at the same time. I think it sends out a great message that women don't have to be weak and can achieve anything they want. I love getting stronger, and I also love the lifestyle, the feeling you get after a great workout. I also love seeing my body gradually improve. I think it's kinda cool that you're always perfecting your body - there is always something more to accomplish.

What are your competition goals or personal future goals?
Right now I’m trying to put on some more size and work on my weaknesses. I want to be bigger, harder and more symmetrical next time I step onstage. I’m not sure yet when that will be – we’ll see. I’m pretty motivated though ;)
