Some Info about TRINA:

Where and when were you born? I was born June 15, in Red Deer Alberta

What is your profession? I am a registered massage therapist

What kind of activities/sports did you do before you started lifting weights? I was always an active kid and adult. I have always been outside, playing baseball in summer (my second greatest love, bb being my first), wakeboarding and rollerblading. In winter I LOVE to snowboard, i am out in the mountains almost every weekend.

How and when did you get involved into lifting weights? I recieved my first 5lb dumbells when I was 13yrs old, and started in the gym when i was 16yrs old. I reallly dont know exactly what got me into bb. I think it started off as wanting to lose a few pounds, once I started reading the magazines at the gym and seeing the results i got i new i wanted to bodybuild.

Was it a goal for you to compete in bodybuilding competitions right from the beginning or was it something that grew in your mind as time went on and you saw the progress in your body? I thought about it since I was 16, but never knew where to start. When i was 22 I met my boyfriend Glen, who had been bb for 15 years. He introduced me to a Lady at our gym, Bernice Green, who has been bb now for 20 yrs. Between the two of them they helped lead me to where I am today.

What was your first competition and how did you place? My first show was the 2002 Alberta Northerns, I placed 2nd. I did the Alberta Provincials 2 wks after and placed 2nd again, but i finished ahead of the girl that placed first at the Northerns.

And which contest has been the biggest success for you yet? That would be the 2003 Alberta Provincials, I placed first in the middle weights.

Could you please add a history of all contests that you have entered so far?
2002 - Alberta Northerns - 2nd middle weight
2002 - Alberta Provincials - 2nd middle weight
2003 - Alberta Northerns - 1st middle weight
2003 - Alberta Provincials - 1st middle weight
2004 - Alberta Provincials Figure - 2nd
2004 - Alberta Provincials couples bodybuilding - 1st

2005 - Canadian National Figure Championships - medium 3rd

Please describe a typical day in the life of Trina Gillis. Well I am usually up anywhere between 5:30am and 6am. I grab a java and head to the gym for am cardio, or down to the walking paths for a run if its nice out. Then its home for breakfast and make up my meals for the day (5meals). I hit the showers and get ready for work. I work at my gym doing muscle therapy. I do a few hours of work then its training time, I do 20 min of cardio then about an 45min - 1hr of weights. Head home, have supper, relax with my boyfriend Glen or head over to one of my girlfriends place. Then its another 30 - 40 min of cardio and my last meal. Then head to bed around 10:30pm. This is of course when preparing for a contest. I cut my cardio down to once a day in off season. The weekends are mainly training and playing in baseball tournaments in the summer. Winter is training and snowboarding in the mountains on weekends.

How often do you train in a week? I usually train weights 2 days on 1 day off. I do cardio 6 days a week, twice - three times a day when i am preparing for a show, once a day in off season.

What are the main differences when you train for a competition and in off-season? I do twice as much cardio and I usuallly do a lot of supersetting and drop sets with weights. I also lower my weights and up my reps with weights.

If you don't mind would you give me some stats (best lifts and some body measurements)? I really dont have many "best lifts", Right now these are my stats:

weight: 134lb
Height: 164cm
biceps: 13 1/4 cm

Which bodypart is your best in your opinion? Well I have worked very hard on my back, I would have to say its one of my strongest parts, but I am most complimented on my legs and abs.

What is your favorite exercise in the gym and which one you don't like so much? I always love to train shoulders, and pull ups for back. I remember when I started to do body weighted pull ups I could only do 3, now i can rep out 12. I probably dislike training legs the most. I dont do much for compound excersices for legs anymore, more plyometrics and giant sets of extensions, curls, and lunges.

Judging in Women's Bodybuilding has always been criticised in one or the other way. But please tell me your honest thoughts about today's judging in Women's Bodybuilding. I think its all subjective. I know at our provincial level, after seeing what they are rewarding I am turning more towards Figure competitions and Tested BB shows.

Please tell me about what else you are doing when you don't work out (profession, hobbies, etc.) I stay ver active. I play baseball tournament almost every weekend in the summer, I wakeboard, and I love to go to the Shushwap in British Columbia in summer. In winter I snowboard almost every weekend, the mountains are only a 3 hour drive so we usually do a day trip on Saturdays. I also love to go to movies, I always like a good silly movie to make me laugh.

What are your future plans? I am currently getting ready to compete in a show in Vancouver. In 2005 I am currently planning on competing in the Canadian National Figure show.

Please note:

Trina does not do sessions or wrestling of any kind. Please don't ask!!
